The Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) was established by the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago as the “principal body for conducting and advising on the accreditation and recognition of post secondary and tertiary educational and training, programmes and awards whether local or foreign, and for the promotion of the quality and standards of post secondary and tertiary education and training in Trinidad and Tobago.” The primary services offered by ACTT are registration of post secondary and tertiary institutions and providers, accreditation of institutions and programmes, recognition of foreign qualifications, conferment of institutional title and quality enhancement support for institutions and providers. The work of ACTT mirrors the commitment by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to improve quality in the tertiary education sector. It ensures that stakeholders obtain value for their investment and by extension also facilitates increased economic, social and cultural development as high quality institutions produce world class graduates who are committed to the task of national and regional development.
As part of its core services, ACTT continues to employ various mechanisms to promote best practices in the local tertiary education sector; one such mechanism is the observance of its 2nd Annual Quality Assurance Week, which will be held from November 02-06, 2009 with the theme “Quality Assurance in Higher Education: Improving Tertiary Education through Institutional Development”. This week of activities is intended to sensitise the public to the importance of quality in higher education and encourage institutions to develop innovative programmes and practices that meet and exceed international standards.
The Council will host a series of activities including panel discussions entitled “Challenges facing Governance and Administration in Tertiary Education” in Trinidad on November 02 and in Tobago on November 03. Additionally, to ensure that students make informed choices regarding tertiary institutions, ACTT will have public displays at national libraries, James Park Tobago (November 03), Harris Promenade (November 04), and Brian Lara Promenade (November 05) to further create awareness of the Council’s services.
