AFETT's 2016 Extraordinary General Meeting

Thursday 17th March

In keeping with the AFETT Constitution, the EGM is held primarily to elect the incoming Shadow Board.  The current Board also utilised this forum to include some other pressing matters on the agenda.  Firstly, the minutes of the 2015 EGM were confirmed by Nassema Ali and seconded by Halcyon Yorke-Young. Secretary and EGM Chairperson Marlene Charles addressed the matter of selecting a new Auditor.  Excerpts from the proposal letter, which had been presented to the Board, were used in the deliberations for the selection of a new auditor – Hyacinth Simms and Co. Chartered Accountant, which was agreed upon by the membership.

Revisions to the constitution were then presented to the members and were unanimously agreed upon and accepted within the following sections:

  • Board of Directors

  • Membership

  • Standing committees

  • Annual General Meeting

  • Finance

  2. The Association’s financial year will now end on December 31st so as to give the auditor sufficient time to prepare an audit for the AGM in June.

The Chair then led the election proceedings. The incoming Board of Directors elected for the 2016-2017 tenure is as follows:

President - Tricia Leid

Immediate Past President - Cavelle Joseph

The guest speaker, Dr. Beverly Ann Marie Beckles, 2014 recipient of AFETT’s Social Entrepreneur Award, then addressed the meeting. Dr Beckles urged members to collectively work to build and strengthen the capabilities of each other.  She spoke about service and likened it to being in the same vein as volunteerism, which she said was a system of doing something by relying on voluntary action or doing something because you want to and not because you are forced to.

She said that in previous years, the meaning of service was doing something because one was committed to and genuinely wished to see a particular outcome. Dr. Beckles shared that we can serve by using our skill sets to improve lives and reiterated that this must be encouraged especially in our young people as it is integral to the social fabric of our nation and dealing with social ills.

Dr. Beckles urged the Association not to give up and noted that it was during difficult times (like the current recession) that NGOs have a greater role to play as persons turn to them for help and support. Each organisation has to find creative ways to serve our society effectively.  She lobbied for greater collaboration among the NGO sector so that service will have an even greater impact on national development in the years to come.

The EGM ended with the pinning of two new members and a Vote of Thanks by Outgoing President, Cavelle Joseph.  Ms. Joseph presented Dr. Beckles with a token of appreciation and thanked the TTCSI for use of their space to host AFETT’s EGM.   She also commended the incoming Board for taking up the mantle of service and encouraged them to be creative and innovative in their approach as they moved forward.
