The guest speaker, Dr. Beverly Ann Marie Beckles, 2014 recipient of AFETT’s Social Entrepreneur Award, then addressed the meeting. Dr Beckles urged members to collectively work to build and strengthen the capabilities of each other. She spoke about service and likened it to being in the same vein as volunteerism, which she said was a system of doing something by relying on voluntary action or doing something because you want to and not because you are forced to.
She said that in previous years, the meaning of service was doing something because one was committed to and genuinely wished to see a particular outcome. Dr. Beckles shared that we can serve by using our skill sets to improve lives and reiterated that this must be encouraged especially in our young people as it is integral to the social fabric of our nation and dealing with social ills.
Dr. Beckles urged the Association not to give up and noted that it was during difficult times (like the current recession) that NGOs have a greater role to play as persons turn to them for help and support. Each organisation has to find creative ways to serve our society effectively. She lobbied for greater collaboration among the NGO sector so that service will have an even greater impact on national development in the years to come.
The EGM ended with the pinning of two new members and a Vote of Thanks by Outgoing President, Cavelle Joseph. Ms. Joseph presented Dr. Beckles with a token of appreciation and thanked the TTCSI for use of their space to host AFETT’s EGM. She also commended the incoming Board for taking up the mantle of service and encouraged them to be creative and innovative in their approach as they moved forward.
