Immediate Past President Tricia Leid Facilitates Session at the UWI Institute for Gender & Development Studies

June 25, 2017

Giving Back and Giving Birth to New Ideas

On June 25th, The University of West Indies’ Institute for Gender Studies invited AFETT’s immediate Past President, Tricia Leid, to deliver a presentation on the Challenges of Branding in a Civil Society Organisation.

Branding is important in a Civil Society organisation, to build a good reputation for their cause to be supported. Continued support can build the organisation by encouraging collaborative efforts as well as funding.

She indicated that at the core of every brand is a personal brand and it is important to understand how one's personal brand aligns with the organisation. It’s not only about being different, but about the difference that is made.

Challenges outlined: Brand credibility, social media strategy, and competition. Brand equity is important for your brand to work for you. Should the public or private sector decide to support your brand they should gain suitable returns such as mileage for their brand.

A strong brand can lead to support, collaborations and funding. Measuring success allows organisations the flexibility to learn and grown.

Leaders of Tomorrow

AFETT’s President, Charlene Pedro, presented “Your Authentic Self” at The Whole Girl Workshop to encourage girls to acknowledge their beauty within. The Whole Girl Workshop, founded by Sunita Gopaul, is a one-week long event designed to empower our young ladies with specific life skills. It focuses on their social, physical and mental components.  It is an excellent confidence builder since it exposes them to a wide range of fun and creative activities. Key takeaways from Charlene’s session was “you are unique and you don’t need permission to be awesome!” The setting allowed the girls to develop their self-esteem, meet other young ladies and form friendships that survive beyond the time spent in the Workshop.
