AFETT's November 2017 Meeting
On November 30, AFETT members and guests experienced the full sensory delights of what is most often misinterpreted as a "boutique" when we were hosted by Caribbean Couture icon Claudia Pegus at her elegant atelier at Long Circular Mall, St James.
Our gracious host, Claudia, a former AFETT member and entrepreneur for almost 40 years, is an enduring in-demand couture designer whose business acumen is reflective of the kind of industry success that is possible in Trinidad & Tobago and the wider Caribbean. While successive governments have grappled with the questions related to the viability of the local industry it is interesting to note the level at which this very industry is regarded and positioned abroad. An excerpt from the Joint Economic Committee-United States Congress report by Ranking Democrat, Carolyn B. Maloney, Feb 6, 2015, following states:
"Fashion is a $1.2 trillion global industry, with more than $250 billion spent annually on fashion in the United States, according to industry analysts. It employs people across occupations - including fashion designers, computer programmers, lawyers, accountants, copywriters, social media directors, and project managers. According to a report by the California Fashion Association, manufacturing is only a fraction of the modern apparel industry as “it is a highly sophisticated industry involving fashion and market research, brand licensing/intellectual property rights, design, materials engineering, product manufacturing, marketing and finally, distribution.
Ultimately, the message last Thursday was about bringing attention to the value and still untapped potential for national growth through the development of locally grown businesses. Guests were delighted and inspired by the exquisite craftsmanship displayed in every CP garment, elegantly showcased in the haute, CP Atelier.
The efforts of our Board members and our Communications Committee are sincerely appreciated! On behalf of President Charlene Pedro and Board of Directors, I extend our deepest gratitude to the Executive, Management and team members of Long Circular Mall for their support of this event, Managing Director and team of Romance Garden, Managing Director of King's Specialty, Regina King, all of our wonderful suppliers, and of course our phenomenal Wonder Women who came out to connect, build relationships and quite possibly, discover potential business opportunities that would redound to their mutual benefit in 2018 and beyond.
