President's Note - August 2018

Yolande Agard-Simmons

AFETT President 2018/2019

Dear Members and Colleagues,

The focus of the 2018/2019 Board of Directors is that of ‘building with a legacy in mind’, and we got off to a fabulous start as the last six weeks have been excellent for the Association:

  • We had a Courtesy Call with the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts; the outcome of which spells good things for the continued partnership for the REACH Mentorship Programme,

  • We welcomed eight (8) new members at the Board’s first Mix & Mingle in July,

  • We met with the University of the West Indies to nominate the beneficiaries of our Annual Bursary Fund,

  • We took the decision to partner with the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce for a September 5th Breakfast Meeting on the issue of ‘Sexual harassment in the workplace’,

  • We received sponsorship for a young graduate of the REACH Mentorship Programme to attend a week-long Finishing School Programme,

  • Our weekly Ask AFETT column in the Newsday newspaper continues going strong as we have had five issues printed thus far,

  • I attended the UWI/Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business’ Workshop on Grant Proposal Writing for NGOs where I connected with more than twenty organisations whose goal and mandate can support our work.

To those of you who were at the Presentation of the Strategic Plan for the 2018/2019 term, I express my personal thanks for your on-the-spot suggestions and acceptance of much of what the Board proposed. We commit to collaborate and partner with organisations to extend the reach of the message and the Association. To those of you who were unavoidably absent, attached is an Excerpt of my Presentation.

We will soon share with you our calendar of events for September-December 2018 – so look out for that email in the coming days.

Remember our Clothing Drive for Suit Me Up 2018 is currently on, so clean out those closets and help a less fortunate young person to ‘present well’ for that interview or job.

Join us later today for an insightful discussion on the issue of Domestic Violence, with our event partner The Shelter. This is a scourge and we all have a role to play in both its prevention and treatment of victim and abuser.

As a Board, we will continue with programmes and projects that support our mission of female empowerment, accelerating our cause to progress interventions that lift all women.

Yours in service,

Yolande Agard-Simmons

President
