President's Note - October 2017

Charlene Pedro

AFETT President 2017/2018

October was the month when the anticipation of joyous end-of-year celebrations is usually overshadowed by the dread of the national budget and the consequent reactions. Our October monthly meeting - The National Budget and You, provided insights from a learned panel of well-read professionals on the impact the budgetary measures may have on us as women as well as citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, and equipped us with the knowledge to make sound financial decisions.

Whilst the economy presents challenges, we must look for the silver lining in the dark cloud of a constricting economy. The current economic environment still provides some entrepreneurial opportunities; however, one must delve a bit deeper than the news headlines to see such opportunities and do the homework.

We salute many of AFETT’s members who have taken the bold step to be an entrepreneur, whether full-time or as a side gig.  We celebrate our “AFETTpreneurs” who will be hosting training events and seminars as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW). GEW will be held from November 13-19, 2017, when thousands of events and competitions in 160 countries inspire millions to engage in entrepreneurial activity while creating an ecosystem by connecting them to potential collaborators, mentors and even investors.

We encourage women to continue to step out and step up to the opportunities to shape their own destiny. We must not allow ourselves to be defined by others or our circumstances. We each have a gift that the world is waiting to behold. Women are effective managers as we manage our households, families and careers. Let’s celebrate that. There will be challenges on the journey, but the evidence has revealed that we are resourceful and resilient.
